Raw powder is a bulk presentation: sealed peptide powder supplied by total mass rather than as a fixed-mass vial. The difference is not cosmetic. A vial answers the question of how much is present by its fill, so quantity is established at manufacture; raw powder answers it on the receiving laboratory's balance. That single change moves responsibility for quantity from the supplier's fill record into your own weighing records.
How documentation changes when quantity is weighed
A vial lot is accounted for in units. A powder lot is accounted for in grams, so every subdivision is a weighing event that has to be recorded if the material is to stay traceable, and balance calibration becomes part of the audit trail rather than background housekeeping.
Lots and certificates never cross between presentations. A vial certificate of analysis does not qualify a powder lot of the same compound, even from one synthesis campaign, because the fill, container and release testing are separate. Qualify each presentation against its own record.
Consequences of an open bulk container
Dry peptide powder is hygroscopic and holds static. Each opening exposes the whole container to ambient humidity, so a lot subdivided ten times has been exposed ten times — the inverse of the aliquot argument, and a reason to weigh working portions out in one session.
Powder also behaves differently from a cake dried in place from a known solution. Solubility is worth establishing for the lot in hand rather than assumed from experience with the vialled line.
Frequently asked questions
- Is raw powder the same material as the vialled version?
It may be the same compound against the same purity specification, but it is a separate catalogue line with its own lot and certificate. Procurement records should treat them as non-interchangeable catalogue lines.
- Why choose a bulk powder format?

- Does weighing introduce error a vial avoids?
Yes, and it is error you own. Static, moisture uptake and residue left on weighing vessels all bias the figure, which is why bulk work needs a written weighing procedure and a calibrated balance.
