Two diluent lines sit in this category, in 3 ml and 10 ml sealed vials. Sterile water has been through a sterilisation step and contains nothing but water. Bacteriostatic water is sterile water plus a preservative — benzyl alcohol — which inhibits microbial growth inside a container that will be entered more than once. The distinction is about what happens after the first entry rather than about which one is cleaner at the point of manufacture; sterile water is the single-entry option, and the preserved line exists for containers with a working life.
A preservative-containing diluent is not automatically the right choice. Benzyl alcohol is an additional chemical species in the system: it absorbs in the low-UV region where peptide readings are often taken, it is an organic solvent component in any assay it enters, and it is a variable a reviewer can reasonably ask about. Where a method needs a clean blank, or where any added organic component would confound the readout, single-entry sterile water is the more defensible material. Where a container is opened repeatedly across days, the preservative is doing real work. The written protocol decides that, not the price difference.
Container size is a contamination-risk decision as much as a quantity one. A small vial used once and discarded has exactly one entry event; a larger vial entered repeatedly accumulates them, and each entry is an opportunity for the container to stop matching its own label. Buying the larger unit to lower cost per millilitre moves risk out of the invoice and into the workflow, which is fine if the protocol accounts for it and a problem if nobody has thought about it.
Storage defaults here also differ from the peptide category. These lines are stocked at room temperature unless the batch label states otherwise, and a printed condition on the lot always overrides the catalogue default. Lot traceability applies to both lines, and where analytical release for a lot is complete the record is published and can be matched to the vial through COA verification. Document availability varies by product, so check the record for the lot you actually received rather than assuming it mirrors a previous order.
Diluents are the most commonly unrecorded material in a peptide workflow. If a laboratory logs the peptide lot but not the water lot, an unexplained result has lost one of its more obvious explanations before anyone starts looking. Record both, and record which of the two water types was used, because the two are not equivalent inputs. One more distinction that causes trouble: the sterility of the water says nothing about the sterility of anything it touches. Sterility is a property of a system, and labware, filters, pipette tips and the working area remain the laboratory's responsibility under its own procedures.
