What 5-Amino-1MQ is

5-Amino-1MQ is a methylquinolinium cation supplied as the iodide salt. The formula C10H11IN2 and the mass 286.11 g/mol include the iodide. A certificate or a weighing that records the material as the free cation alone will be wrong by the mass of iodine. That is the first receiving check.

It is not a peptide. There is no sequence, no N-terminus and no amide. Reconstitution calculators built for lyophilised peptides still do arithmetic, but solubility, counter-ion behaviour and HPLC methods are those of a small polar salt, not a 10-residue chain.

The research reason the molecule exists is NNMT — nicotinamide N-methyltransferase — which methylates nicotinamide using S-adenosylmethionine. Inhibitor papers treat 5-amino-1-methylquinolinium as a substrate-site ligand. That is enzyme-level context for a laboratory, not a consumer metabolic claim.

Where the research literature sits

Neelakantan, Wang, Vance and colleagues reported in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry (2017) a structure–activity series of N-methylated quinolinium and related cations as NNMT inhibitors, with docking into the nicotinamide site. That paper is the chemical map of the scaffold.

Neelakantan, Vance, Wetzel and colleagues followed in Biochemical Pharmacology (2018) with membrane-permeability, selectivity and cultured-adipocyte measurements, plus diet-induced obese mouse pharmacology for a potent analogue in the series. Mouse body-composition results are preclinical. They are not a human outcome and they are not a reason to use catalog material in a person.

HPLC methods written for peptides will often need a different gradient and detection window for a small quinolinium. Store sealed lyophilised vials at 2–8 °C, protected from light and humidity, and equilibrate before opening. Hygroscopic salts take up Gulf moisture quickly once the stopper is lifted. After dissolution, document solvent, concentration and date; do not assume peptide freeze-thaw rules are the limiting factor — photostability and iodide oxidation chemistry may be.

Keep this line out of the peptide blend drawer. A stores error that files 5-Amino-1MQ next to Semax because both are 10 mg white cakes will produce a meaningless certificate match.
